A Yukon-born artist and home care worker, Virginia Mitford is currently making a home in the Central Yukon. Having grown up on a remote trapline on the Stewart River with her family and many sled dogs, her work always draws from her connection to her history and to the land around her.Since graduating from Memorial University with a BFA in 2013, she has taken part in artist residencies in Montreal and across both Newfoundland and the Yukon.
Working with a variety of media-namely printmaking, drawing/painting and animation-Virginia uses art to navigate and untangle overwhelming emotions arising from to her relationship to the land, her body and to her dog companions past and present. She is the recipient of multiple awards and grants and has been an active member of the arts community wherever she resides. For the time being Virginia is mainly just figuring out how to fit artmaking into a life of care work, gardening, berry picking, naps, swing dancing and dog walks. Her ongoing project “Fuzzy Foot” is funded by a Canada Council Research and Creation Grant.
